हालांकि, यह एक सौ प्रतिशत सत्य है कि भारतीय समाज में, देवी लक्ष्मी जैसी महिलाओं की पूजा की जाती है, लेकिन महिलाओं के प्रति नकारात्मक पहलुओं को नजरअंदाज नहीं किया जा सकता है। महिलाओं की सुरक्षा का महत्व बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है चाहे वह घर पर हो, या कार्यालय में। महिलाओं की सुरक्षा अपने आप में बहुत व्यापक है, पिछले कुछ वर्षों में महिलाओं के खिलाफ बढ़ते अत्याचारों को देखते हुए, हम यह नहीं कह सकते हैं कि हमारे देश में महिलाएं पूरी तरह से सुरक्षित हैं। महिलाएं खुद को असुरक्षित महसूस करती हैं, खासकर यदि वे अकेले बाहर जाना चाहती हैं। यह वास्तव में हमारे लिए शर्मनाक है कि हमारे देश में महिलाएं भय में जी रही हैं। यह आवश्यक नहीं है कि महिलाओं का उत्पीड़न केवल देर शाम या रात में ही हो, लेकिन इस तरह के अजीब मामले परिवार के रिश्तेदारों या कार्यालय में भाग लेने से सामने आए हैं। एक एनजीओ द्वारा किए गए एक सर्वेक्षण में, यह पाया गया कि इन बढ़ते अपराधों का मुख्य कारण कार्यस्थल में सहकारी काम की कमी, पुलिस सेवा जैसे खुलेपन, शराब की खपत, नशे की लत और शौचालय की कमी थी।

पिछले कुछ सालों में महिलाओं की सुरक्षा का स्तर लगातार गिर रहा है। इसके पीछे का कारण अपराध में निरंतर वृद्धि है। मध्यकालीन युग से लेकर 21 वीं सदी तक महिलाओं की स्थिति में लगातार गिरावट आई है। महिलाओं को पुरुषों के बराबर अधिकार हैं, वे देश की आधी आबादी का प्रतिनिधित्व करती हैं और विकास में आधे भागीदार भी हैं। इस तर्क से इनकार नहीं किया जा सकता है कि आज के आधुनिक युग में, महिलाएं न केवल उन्नत पुरुषों बल्कि दो कदम आगे भी हैं। राष्ट्रपति कार्यालय से, वह जिला-स्तरीय योजनाओं का आधार बन गया है। सामान्यीकरण के बिना महिलाओं की कल्पना नहीं की जा सकती। हालांकि, अगर भारत में महिलाओं के खिलाफ अपराधों की एक सूची है, तो यह बहुत लंबा है; इसमें एसिड अटैक, हिंसा, यौन हिंसा, दहेज हत्या, अपहरण, ऑनर किलिंग, बलात्कार, भ्रूण हत्या, मानसिक उत्पीड़न आदि शामिल हैं।

महिलाओं की सुरक्षा एक सामाजिक समस्या है, इसे जल्द से जल्द हल करने की जरूरत है। महिलाओं की आबादी आधे से अधिक है, जो शारीरिक, मानसिक और सामाजिक स्थिति से पीड़ित हैं। यह देश के विकास और प्रगति के लिए एक बाधा है। हर दिन और हर मिनट में देश के सभी क्षेत्रों की कुछ महिलाएँ (एक माँ, एक बहन, एक पत्नी, छोटी बच्चियाँ, और बच्चियाँ बच्चे) पूरे देश में विभिन्न स्थानों पर उत्पीड़न, छेड़छाड़, मारपीट और हिंसा करती हैं। सड़कों, सार्वजनिक स्थानों, सार्वजनिक परिवहन, आदि जैसे क्षेत्र महिला शिकारियों के क्षेत्र रहे हैं। स्कूलों या कॉलेजों में पढ़ने वाली छात्राओं को किताबों या बैग के माध्यम से खुद को ढाल लेना पड़ता है या उन्हें ऐसे कपड़े पहनने पड़ते हैं जो उन्हें पूरी तरह से ढक सकें। कुछ मामलों में, कुछ पैसे कमाने के लिए एक बालिका को उसके माता-पिता द्वारा बिक्री की जाती है। लड़कियों को आम तौर पर सड़कों पर एसिड हमलों का सामना करना पड़ता है और अजनबियों द्वारा सेक्स के उद्देश्य के लिए अपहरण किया जाता है। आंकड़ों के अनुसार, यह पाया गया है कि भारत में हर 20 मिनट में एक महिला का बलात्कार होता है।
